Our Story
51 Years. One Recipe. One Neighborhood.
Jim Tsoulamanis grew up surrounded by traditional Greek cooking. He carried a family dough recipe across an ocean, opened the doors at 5602 4 St NW in 1975, and 51 years later that same recipe is still rolled out every morning.
From Greece to NW Calgary
After immigrating to Canada, Jim Tsoulamanis and his wife Kristina set out to build something special — a neighborhood place that served the food they grew up on, made the way their families made it. New country, new language, a lot of long days and late nights. They built it anyway.
Today their son Peter plays an active role in the kitchen and the floor, carrying the family legacy forward into a third generation of Thorncliffe regulars.
The Family Recipe
The dough is hand-tossed from a recipe Jim Tsoulamanis brought from Greece. The sauce is made in-house every morning. The cheese is Alberta-made mozzarella. There’s no shortcut to the way TOPS tasted in 1975, and we haven’t looked for one.
It’s why regulars from Huntington Hills, Thorncliffe, Highland Park, and twenty other NW communities have kept coming back across three generations. The TOPS Original — pepperoni, mushrooms, bacon, green peppers, olives, and shrimp — is the same pizza their grandparents ordered.
More Than Pizza
Over the decades, TOPS grew into the neighborhood’s sports bar too. 30+ TVs cover every Flames game, every CFL Saturday, every UFC pay-per-view, every NHL playoff push. A full bar, cold beer, daily specials, a pool table, a jukebox, VLTs in the lounge.
The Three Pizzas Named For Our Neighborhoods
51 years of feeding NW Calgary earned three of our pizzas the right to wear neighborhood names:
- The Thorncliffe — Our signature pizza named for the neighborhood we’ve called home for nearly 50 years.
- The Huntington — Named for Huntington Hills — bold and unapologetic.
- The Beddington — A Beddington Heights favorite, loaded for the whole crew.
